Washington, D.C. – House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) held a press conference today where he called on President Biden and Congressional Democrats to focus on the real issues that working and middle-class Americans are facing.

“The American people are fed up with one-party rule in Washington that dismisses their needs and downplays their concerns,” said McCarthy. “When Republicans take the majority next year – we make this commitment to every American: we will listen to you. We will hear you. We will work on policies that will improve your quality of life.”

Remarks as prepared are below, or watch online here.

“Another week, and a few more Democrats answered the question about their retirement.

“But one was not just any member – this week it was a chairman of a committee.

“Mr. DeFazio is the 19th Democrat to announce he is retiring so far this year. I know there are still more to come.

“Many of you who have been covering the Hill for a while know that chairmen of committees don’t decide to retire unless they know they are looking at the near certain prospects of life in the minority.

“And who could blame them?

“Now, he is the 19th Democrat to announce retirement.

“To put that in perspective: In 2010, when Democrats lost 63 seats, 17 Democrats announced retirement. We’ve already surpassed that.

” Why do they want to retire? It’s been a disastrous Congress.

“What have they been able to achieve? In the last 12 months, what have they been able to do with one-party rule?

“Their $5 trillion socialist spending bill is unpopular with the American people – in fact, so unpopular that Rep. Luria in Virginia recently admitted she even avoids bringing it up back at home.

“Leadership says they need to get out and talk about it more, but Rep. Lauria doesn’t want to talk about it at home.

“House Democrats released their calendar for next year and they scheduled the least number of voting days in modern history.

“If you take this year and next year, it’ll add up to about 200 voting days.

“When Republicans were in the majority, we averaged around 250.

“We should be upset they are doing the bare minimum, but maybe we should be relieved it will give them less time to push bad policies.

“Because there is no doubt President Biden’s entire presidency has been an abject failure.

“He promised to ‘shut down the virus’ – he hasn’t.

“President Biden’s only strategy so far has been to threaten Americans with more arbitrary Covid restrictions and mandates.

“He told us inflation would be temporary – it isn’t.

“This week both the Federal Reserve chair and Biden’s own Treasury Secretary said it was time to retire the word ‘transitory.’ Chairman Powell could not even confirm whether consumer prices would even let up over the next year. I suppose the White House will have to come up with a new talking point to dismiss Americans’ inflation concerns.

“After his policies caused gas prices to skyrocket — he said he would lower gas prices – he hasn’t.

“And no, a measly 2 cents a gallon does not count as a reduction. He depleted 50 million barrels of oil from our emergency supply and has done nothing to reverse his anti-American energy agenda that has contributed to the spike in prices. In my home state of California last month, for three days in a row posted record-breaking gas prices.

“It’s not just gas prices. When they fill up their car and go to the grocery store it will cost them more. If they turn on the heat, it’ will cost them more.

“With Christmas around the corner, American families are rightfully concerned about their ability to get their packages and purchases. The President’s answer: He can’t promise your Christmas gifts will arrive on time.

“The American people are fed up with one-party rule in Washington that dismisses their needs and downplays their concerns.

“When Republicans take the majority next year – we make this commitment to every American: we will listen to you. We will hear you. We will work on policies that will improve your quality of life.”
