Washington, D.C. – House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) held a press conference today where he called on Speaker Pelosi and House Democrats to stop rushing their reckless agenda through Congress.

“We are moments away from voting on a 2,145 page bill, advanced in the dead of night, finalized only hours ago, that no one in this body has read,” said Leader McCarthy. “We should be working on lowering consumer costs and reducing runaway inflation, but instead President Biden and Speaker Pelosi’s agenda will make inflation a permanent mainstay in our economy.”

“We are moments away from voting on a 2,145 page bill, advanced in the dead of night, finalized only hours ago, that no one in this body has read.

“Only 10 percent of Americans say they know what’s in this bill, and I bet that percentage is even lower amongst Democrats in Congress.

“The Congressional Budget Office has not shown the American people exactly how much this bill will cost, as required by the Congressional Budget Act and the Rules of the House.

“And that CBO report will only arrive as American families get an enormous receipt for their Thanksgiving dinner.

“One clue we have of the price tag, however, comes from the Penn Wharton Budget Model. It states that the true cost of Democrats’ bill is $4 trillion; twice as high as Democrats have advertised. Or 4$ trillion more than Democrats claim.

“Are members of Congress even aware of this estimate?

“While Democrats’ reconciliation plan has no transparency, Tuesday’s results show us an important truth.

“Voters from Virginia to Texas to New Jersey and even Minneapolis and Seattle delivered a mandate to elected officials: Stop catering to the progressive left, and work on solutions that will improve lives for our families.

“Even the NYT Editorial Board agrees elements of the reconciliation plan are part of a ‘sharp leftward push in the party.’

“We have millions of voters who sent the Democrats a clear message. And where are the Democrats today?

“Breaking their own rules, setting new records in keeping votes open, and trying to intimidate and bully their own members. Why? So Speaker Pelosi can get on her jet and go to Europe for the third time in three months?

“We should be working on lowering consumer costs and reducing runaway inflation, but instead President Biden and Speaker Pelosi’s agenda will make inflation a permanent mainstay in our economy.

“We should be working on fixing our supply chain crisis, but the Democrat policies will create even more disruptions by shipping more of our business overseas.

“It appears Congressional Democrats want to do everything possible to continue to make things worse.

“The vote today is rushed and irresponsible.

“It just continues to raise the question of the Speaker. Is she more concerned with just being a lame duck and getting on her farewell tour — or working for the American public?

“You know, it’s been said many times. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. In 2009, Democrats got this exact same message from voters in Virginia and New Jersey.

“Four days later, Nancy Pelosi did the exact same thing as today. She rushed a vote on Obamacare and 63 Democrats lost their seat. I thought people would have learned from that.

“We have the rules of the House, but you have to know what a bill will do and what it will cost. We have members on the Democrat’s side who said they would never vote for it unless they were able to read it.

“We have a leadership that is pushing and trying to bully them. We have an American public who is pushing back, saying focus on the challenges, the rising costs, and the inflation, which was mainly created by the Democrats’ push earlier this year on the trillions of dollars in spending when we warned them not to.

“We have a border that is open, rising gasoline prices, and they’re looking to OPEC to solve them instead of allowing American jobs and American workers to solve them.

“And all today, they want to rush through a bill that will cost $4 trillion and bring more harm and damage to problems they already created.”
