WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy released the following statement on H.R. 3401, the Emergency Funding Measure for the Southern Border:

“After eight weeks of inaction, emergency funding will finally be sent to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis on our Southern border. This could not have come at a more critical time, and I applaud my colleagues for coming together in a bipartisan fashion.

“This funding measure will provide the resources the government needs to do its job effectively. Border patrol agents, immigration judges, and active duty military personnel will be better equipped to secure our border, process immigration cases, and investigate human traffickers, who exploit children and endanger our national security. Migrant families and children will also receive better medical care and safer shelter.

“Common sense prevailed over partisanship in Congress today. But there is more to be done.

“Americans recognize that the root cause of the crisis on our border is our broken immigration system. Misguided laws incentivize deadly decisions that involve families and children exposing themselves to life-threatening journeys and potentially exploitation by human traffickers. If we cannot fix them, our border will continue to see record numbers of migrants attempting to cross them.

“Congress must continue to put politics aside and focus on solutions that fix our broken immigration system.”
