Washington, D.C. – House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) released the following statement on House adoption of the Conference Report of the Every Student Succeeds Act:

“Parents and teachers know what is best for children, not bureaucrats at the Department of Education. Over the past few decades, we’ve learned well that the further education policy is taken away from parents and students, the worse the results are. Attempts to dictate education policy from Washington have led to a backlash by students, teachers, and parents, while schools that have the freedom to operate on their own terms without heavy-handed, centralized control are helping even the most disadvantaged students receive a quality education and fulfill their dreams.

“The reforms in this bill take power away from the federal government and put it back in the hands of local governments and parents where it belongs. Notably, the report ensures that the secretary of education can’t force Common Core on the states and restores the states’ authority to fix underperforming schools. Because of Chairman John Kline’s (MI-02) leadership and persistence, we are taking a step in the right direction on education, stripping power away from the federal government and giving our students new opportunities to succeed.”
