House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) released the following statement after Congresswoman Julia Letlow (LA-05) was officially sworn into office today by Speaker Pelosi:

“Within weeks of suffering the tragic loss of her husband, Julia Letlow announced she would be running for the Congressional seat in Louisiana’s 5th District – the seat her husband, Luke, was set to fill. In the midst of grieving, Julia made the decision to finish out the mission Luke had started. Today, after being sworn into office, she has officially earned the title Representative Letlow.

“Julia’s courage and fortitude should inspire us all. The strength she has exhibited in the wake of tragedy is reminiscent of some of our nation’s greatest leaders, and I know she will bring that same tenacity in representing her constituents in Washington.

“Her addition to our conference will bolster our historic freshman class of Republican women, and help further shrink Democrats’ majority to a two-vote margin.

“It is truly an honor to welcome her today as an official member of Congress, and I know she will bring invaluable insight and leadership while serving on the House Committees on Agriculture and Education and Labor.

“Julia has made her family proud, especially her two children, Jeremiah and Jacqueline, and I know Luke is looking down from above in awe at his wife’s achievement.”
