“She just taps the heart and it starts beating,” Holly O’Donnell said, talking about her former colleague dissecting a baby after a late-term abortion at Planned Parenthood.
It is impossible not to be disgusted with what is depicted in these videos. The House has and will continue to investigate Planned Parenthood, especially to uncover any illegal activity regarding infanticide or the sale of body parts. However, whether or not anything illegal was done, what is happening is wrong, and the callousness by which babies are killed and their organs are harvested for scientific research is the definition of barbarism.
Federal and state governments (meaning American taxpayers) are the largest funders of Planned Parenthood—sending the organization over $500 million last fiscal year alone. Meanwhile, that money frees up Planned Parenthood to use other funds to pay for the 327,653 abortions it performed in that time and perhaps even the type of gruesome harvesting we’ve seen in the videos.
No American should ever be forced to support such an organization with their tax dollars. To do so shows that some politicians care more about facilitating the harvesting of baby body parts than they do about the lives of those children and the conscience objections of the citizens they serve.
In response to the horrifying practices depicted in these videos, the House will pass two bills this week:
- The Defund Planned Parenthood Act (H.R. 3134) will place a one-year moratorium on federal funding for Planned Parenthood unless Planned Parenthood certifies that it will not provide or fund another organization that performs abortions. The House will also vote on an amendment to shift funding that would otherwise go to Planned Parenthood to other women’s health providers so that women can receive the care they need without forcing taxpayers to fund abortions. This moratorium will give Congress the time to investigate whether or not Planned Parenthood engaged in illegal activity and the extent of its shocking practices.
- The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act would save the lives of abortion survivors by imposing criminal penalties on medical professionals who fail to try and save a child born alive after an abortion attempt. As we heard in emotional testimonies given by abortion survivors to the House Judiciary Committee, they were the lucky ones who were given life-saving treatment after a failed abortion attempt. Many others who are born alive are left to die or killed after the abortion attempt. There are already federal laws requiring assistance to babies born alive during an abortion procedure, but these laws have been violated. This bill will put teeth on those laws, and hopefully save the lives of more children.
There is no reason—absolutely no reason—we must choose between supporting women’s health and forcing taxpayers to support abortion. There are many organizations, like community health centers, that provide health care for women without offering abortion services or harvesting child body parts, and these organizations are more deserving of federal funding than Planned Parenthood.
We can both save lives and respect the conscience rights of the American people. Defunding Planned Parenthood and saving newborns is the right thing to do, and the House is going to do it.
