Washington, D.C. – House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) released the following statement on House passage of H.R. 36, the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act:

“In our society, we have the room, the resources, and the love for every child—even the smallest and most fragile. Every single child—born and unborn, the healthy and those with disabilities—should have a place. I believe they are wanted, they are loved, and they make this world better. Our society should agree that that nobody is expendable, and we should never hurt innocents.

“Over the years, science has become increasingly clear on late-term abortions. By eight weeks, babies in the womb react to touch. By 20 weeks, if not before, they can feel pain. At that point when they can feel pain—at the very least then—we should do everything we can to nurture them, not hurt them.

“Today, the House has drawn a line, which is why I strongly support this bill. We made it clear that when a baby has grown for 20 weeks, when she can feel pain, when you can see her nose and her ears, when you can hear her heartbeat and feel her kick, that’s where—at the very, very least—we must end abortions and where we instead welcome and love her.”
