Does the President honestly not see how dangerous his plan to close Guantanamo Bay is? These are terrorists who intend to harm America and kill innocent people. The American people rightly don’t want them on American soil, and foreign countries can’t be trusted to properly monitor the terrorists once they are released.

Case in point, Spanish and Moroccan police have just arrested a former Guantanamo detainee who is suspected of being part of an ISIS cell in North Africa. This is somebody who was once safely under lock and key in Cuba. When we let him go, he joined back up with other terrorists, seemingly starting where he left off.

We don’t know exactly who this is yet, but Spanish authorities described him as “a leader who was trained in handling weapons, explosives, and military tactics.” That is exactly the kind of person we shouldn’t let out into the world or into our country.

On the very same day as these arrests were made, the President announced an incomplete plan to close Guantanamo Bay and move the terrorists there to the United States. The President obviously doesn’t understand the nature of the terrorist threat. His Administration has released terrorists before who rejoined the fight, even trading multiple high-level terrorists for Bowe Bergdahl in a move that only incentivizes terrorists to kidnap Americans.

But he should not try to honor a foolish campaign promise at the expense of American security and our interests. Congress is resolute. The correct choice is clear. We cannot close Guantanamo Bay.
