Washington, D.C. – House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) appeared on Fox News to discuss California primary election results, historic obstruction by Senate Democrats, and our nation’s roaring economy.
Excerpts of the interview are below, or watch online here.
On Californians revolting against Democrats who voted to raise the gas tax:
“A little story that no one’s talking about right now is a state senator, a Democrat just got recalled. A state senate seat in California is bigger than a congressional seat––it’s a million people and the [recall] was all over one issue. When the Democrats took over, they passed a gasoline tax and now California has the highest gasoline price in the nation and we just recalled a state senator and elected a Republican, Ling-Ling Chang. The [gas tax] initiative is going to be on the ballot in November and Democrats are going to have to defend raising the gasoline tax while Republicans say they want to repeal it.”
On historic obstruction by Senate Democrats:
“The Senate has 503 bills that have passed the House sitting over there. And one of the reasons why they have so many bills sitting there is that the Democrats are delaying everything…. When we passed 12 appropriation bills to fund the entire government––the Democrats voted to block them so they couldn’t even be debated. To me they are just trying to stop everything and that’s certainly what [Senator] Schumer is trying to do…. [Senator] McConnell is right to push Schumer and he’s upset because it’s going to be humid here and because they haven’t done their work. They have 503 House bills that they can take up.”
On how the GOP agenda is helping our economy thrive:
“Republicans are getting the job done. We just tied the lowest unemployment rate in the last 50 years. During only seven months in the last 50 years has the unemployment rate ever been below 4.0%. We just did that for the last two months. If you look at small business confidence…it’s at record high levels. This is some of the best economic news we have seen in our lifetime.”
