This week the House is considering three bills to expand educational opportunity and reduce the costs of higher education.

  • H.R. 3136, Advancing Competency-Based Education Demonstration Project Act of 2013 starts a pilot program so that we can measure student progress and student aid are by more than “credit hours.” It will take into account models of education that measure learning beyond just time spent in the classroom.
  • H.R. 4938, Strengthening Transparency in Higher Education Act creates a consumer-tested College Dashboard that would display key information that students need to decide between schools.
  • H.R.4984, Empowering Students Through Enhanced Financial Counseling Act ensures students receive proper financial literacy assistance before, during, and after they take out student loans.

Each of these bills share the goals of increasing affordability, transparency, and innovation to increase access to education while lowering costs.
