Washington, D.C. – House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) released the following statement on House passage of the National Defense Authorization Act of 2016:

“With a strong bipartisan vote, the House passed the bicameral National Defense Authorization Act for next year. This not only authorizes pay for our troops, but will also institute reforms in the Department of Defense (DOD) acquisitions process and improve military retirement options.

“This bill authorizes $515 billion in national defense spending and another $89.2 billion for Overseas Contingency operations. But it does this while cutting wasteful and excessive spending so that money is spent on what is most necessary. In the wake of the shootings of our military personnel in Chattanooga, this bill makes necessary reforms to empower commanders to allow members of our Armed Forces to carry firearms at DOD installations, reserve centers, and recruiting centers. It also provides resources for increased cybersecurity programs and activities.

“National defense is the primary purpose of the federal government, and this bill authorizes the funding to make sure our country is safe, our troops are provided for, and that taxpayer money is being used as efficiently and effectively as possible.”
