Washington, D.C. – Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) released the following statement on passage of today’s House resolution to condemn Hamas’s use of innocent civilians as human shields:

“Every nation has the right to defend itself, and Israel is no different. Calls for both sides to exercise ‘restraint’ have done nothing to stop Hamas’s wanton violence, ignore the extraordinary restraint exercised by Israel, and, worse, imply that Israel is just as much to blame as Hamas.

“This is blatantly untrue. Hamas is evil. Its intentions are evil and the means it uses to achieve its terroristic ends are evil. They preach murder of Jews and destruction of Israel as they hide behind walls of bystanders and children.

“Today, the House passed H. Res. 107 condemning the use of innocent civilians as human shields and calling on the international community to condemn this horrible tactic as a breach of international law and an affront to human decency. Any ceasefire must entail an urgent and enduring effort to demilitarize Gaza and confront Hamas’ rockets and tunnels, which otherwise will continue to pose a significant threat to Israel and increase the risk of renewed conflict.

“America will always stand behind Israel as Israel asserts its right to exist and as it does what is necessary to protect its people.”
