Washington, D.C. – Today, House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) released the following statement on the passing of Sheldon Adelson:

“Today the world mourns the loss of one of the greatest, most generous businessmen in history. Sheldon Adelson had a deep love of country, love of community, and love of Israel. Born into a working-class home in Boston, he understood what it meant to work hard, build a business, and give back to the community. His life made him a fearless advocate for freedom and entrepreneurship and a source of counsel and support to a generation of conservatives, including me. I was honored to call Sheldon a friend. I will always look back fondly on our time together and reflect on his wisdom in the future.

“Sheldon was a longtime friend of Israel who believed strongly in the special relationship between our two great democracies and wanted to pass it onto the next generation. He did this by supporting educational missions to Israel and fighting to ensure Israel was recognized on the world stage. His vocal support of our special relationship culminated in the Trump Administration’s decision to move our embassy to its rightful home in Jerusalem in 2018. History will remember him as someone who truly shaped the course of human events.

“But those of us who admired Sheldon will also remember him for the other charitable causes he championed. One of the most important was the Adelson Clinic, a drug rehabilitation center for opioid addiction that opened twenty years ago—long before this horrible crisis was national news. Today, the clinic continues to help adults and teenagers recover from their addictions and regain their lives. Its dedication to its patients fittingly embodies his devotion to helping others.

“Sheldon has now gone home. But the legacy he leaves behind will last many lifetimes. We will always remember how he helped to improve the nations he loved, advance the democratic values they stand for, and support the people who call them home. He was freedom’s greatest friend. Judy and I send our deepest condolences to his family. May the memory of Sheldon always be for a blessing.”
