Washington, D.C. – House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) released the following statement on House passage of H.R. 5538, the Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies appropriations bill for FY 2017:

“This appropriations bill cuts spending from last year and is a full $1 billion below the President’s request. But for my home state of California, this bill has particular significance. Right now, people in California and across the Western United States are hurting, and policies at the federal and state level are making the problem worse. Water is our lifeblood in the Central Valley, and this bill includes desperately needed California water provisions to increase pumping and relieve some of the pain our communities are feeling today.

“Furthermore, with multiple fires in the West, including the catastrophic Erskine Fire in my district, I am pleased this bill also includes important increases in funding and supports hazardous fuels removal to prevent and reduce the threat of wildland fires. It also includes provisions to aid the entire West by blocking the harmful EPA Waters of the U.S. rule and to stop new EPA greenhouse gas regulations on power plants.”
