Washington, D.C. – House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) held a press conference today where he described how the Democrats’ reconciliation bill does nothing to fix our supply chain crisis or reduce the cost of living increases that American families are facing.
“We have a supply chain crisis that continues to rage on, exacerbating the skyrocketing prices and scarcity of goods our citizens are experiencing,” said Leader McCarthy. “And ask yourself this: what has this chamber done, especially this week, to alleviate any of these pressures on our fellow citizens, the people we were sent here to represent?”
“Another week, and a few more Democrats have announced retirement.
“Another week, and morale across the country has plummeted: Seventy percent of Americans describe the economy as ‘poor’ or ‘not so good’ — the highest number since last time President Biden served in the White House.
“U.S. consumer confidence recently plunged to a 10-year low.
“One in 4 consumers have reported reducing their living standards as they adjust to the 31-year high inflation rate.
“We have a supply chain crisis that continues to rage on, exacerbating the skyrocketing prices and scarcity of goods our citizens are experiencing.
“And ask yourself this: what has this chamber done, especially this week, to alleviate any of these pressures on our fellow citizens, the people we were sent here to represent?
“The answer is absolutely nothing.
“The Democrat majority under the leadership of Speaker Pelosi is more interested in protecting special interests and delivering tax cuts for their wealthy friends.
“Speaker Pelosi is burning down the House on her way out the door.
“She isn’t concerned about how many bad votes Democrats members have to take, or how many Democrat retirements she creates.
“Who can blame these Democrats for retiring?
“They see the writing on the wall and they know this reconciliation bill will be the end of their Democrat majority, and for many, their Congressional careers.
“If House Democrats follow through with passing this, it will all but guarantee that even if you are sitting in a D+10 seat, you are at risk of losing your seat.
“I don’t know how Representatives Spanberger and Luria are going to defend this vote and run for reelection, considering Republican Governor-elect Glenn Youngkin won their districts by 11 and 8 points, respectively.
“After that election, Democrats didn’t even listen to what Rep. Spanberger said: ‘President Biden wasn’t elected to be FDR.’
“And the bill they want to bring up today, the Chief of Staff to President Biden bragged was bigger than the New Deal — so I wonder if she’ll keep her word on how she will vote.
“I don’t think their constituents are going to appreciate them helping to pass a bill that:
- Empowers the IRS to try to squeeze every single dollar from American families and small businesses
- Its second-biggest program gives away billions to the rich
- Delivers a tax cut to two thirds of the country’s millionaires
“Democrats’ IRS enforcement proposals to hire 87,000 will end up in an additional 1.2 million IRS audits:
- Nearly half of those audits will directly impact families earning $75,000 or less
- About one quarter will affect Americans who earn $25,000 per year
“Is this really what Speaker Pelosi considers a ‘spectacular vision?‘
“What about those 21 Democrats who sent the Speaker a letter asking her to not include it in the bill, will they still vote for it?
“But will it be enough for some of them to wake up and oppose this disastrous bill?
“I suppose we will find out later today.
“Over the course of one year, we’ve watched this country, with one-party rule, have skyrocketing gas prices, leave Americans behind in the Middle East, experience inflation like we haven’t seen in three decades, allow crime in our streets, and what is the Democrats answer? To only double-down further.”
