Washington, D.C. – Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) released the following statement on the passage of S. 1838, the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act of 2019:

“Freedom is declining in Hong Kong at a rapid pace. China is taking aggressive action to impose total control through surveillance, political pressure, and, as we saw this weekend, brute force.

“The United States cannot and will not allow China to reap the rewards of a free society so long as it categorically suppresses one. As private property rights, the rule of law, the right to a fair trial, and democracy deteriorate in Hong Kong, its special trade status under American law is under threat. That is why Congress is taking decisive action to protect American interests and hold China accountable for its misconduct.

“I commend my colleagues for their overwhelming bipartisan support for this legislation. Like the Senate, the House has passed this necessary measure by a defining margin. The consensus in both chambers sends a clear message that the United States stands with the people of Hong Kong and will punish further aggression by China.”
