Washington, D.C. – Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) released the following statement on the passage of S. 178, the Uyghur Human Rights Policy Act of 2019:

“China’s oppression of millions of Uyghurs is a gross violation of human rights. As leaked documents from senior Chinese officials recently revealed, the Communist Party is obsessed with imposing strict control over the minority population in northwestern China and is willing to use its full power to achieve it, regardless of the human cost. This situation previews a brave new world of facial recognition and other surveillance technologies and lays bare the true evil of communism. The world is rightly disturbed.

“By passing this bill, Congress is showing that the United States will not turn a blind eye to the suffering of the oppressed. As with the Hong Kong Democracy and Human Rights Act, we are sending a simple but powerful message to the Communist Party: power cannot be maintained at the expense of the rights of the people without substantial consequences.

“I urge President Trump to sign it without delay.

“Freedom cannot be suppressed indefinitely. China had the chance to hold itself to a higher standard of justice. Now, it must be held accountable for its systematic injustices.”
