Washington, D.C. – House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) released the following statement on the President’s Afghanistan announcement:

“I am pleased that the President completely reversed course from his original, irresponsible plan to reduce troop levels in Afghanistan to 5,500 by the end of 2016. Still, this decision to reduce forces from 9,800 to around 8,400 at the height of the fighting season places increased risk on the mission. The Taliban and Haqqani Network controls more territory today than at any point since 2001. Al-Qaeda’s presence has grown and Islamic State fighters in Afghanistan have proven resilient. Now is not the time to talk about troop reductions or to continue to tie the hands of our military personnel by barring our commanders from going after the Taliban and Haqqani Network the same way they are authorized to go after the Islamic State.”
