Last month alone at our southern border, there were over 164,000 border apprehensions. And under the Biden administration’s watch, there have been over 2.5 million apprehensions so far.

Unfortunately, this leads to U.S. Customs and Border Patrol agents being pulled away from the border and into processing facilities, which creates holes in our security and allows cartels to bring drugs like fentanyl through the border. Fentanyl, an opioid that is 80-100x time stronger than morphine, is the number one killer of Americans from ages 18-40.

At the House Republican Conference retreat, Leader McCarthy (CA-23) and Rep. Tony Gonzales (TX-23), a member of the House Republican Task Force on American Security, linked up to discuss the importance of securing our border if we are going to stop the fentanyl crisis in this country.

Highlights of remarks are below, or you may watch the video here.

Rep. Tony Gonzales: “Last year, there were over 4,000 Russians who came over the border illegally. We asked Secretary Mayorkas how many of these people pose a threat, and he had no idea.”

Leader McCarthy: “That’s what we discovered first from the border agents: They’re catching people on the terrorist watch list – from Yemen even. Why are they coming, and what are they up to?”

Leader McCarthy: “We have Title 42, which came in under President Trump to protect [America], especially during the pandemic when people aren’t being tested – [and] President Biden wants to get rid of it.”

Leader McCarthy: “The worst part is the fentanyl, and this is where it comes from. It comes from China through our border and it’s the number one killer of Americans between the ages of 18-40… the problem now with fentanyl is that every city is a border city.”
