House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy issued the following statement on the August Consumer Price Index report as first reported in the Daily Mail:

“The cost of living is up 8.3% over last year, rose further this month despite Democrats’ victory lap in July, and is up nearly 13% since January 2021. Joe Biden and Democrats in Congress are to blame, and they have no plan to fix it.

“Grocery prices are up 13.5% since last August, the largest one-year increase since 1979. Joe Biden and Democrats in Congress are to blame, and they have no plan to fix it.

“Housing costs are up 6.2% over the last year. Joe Biden and Democrats in Congress are to blame, and they have no plan to fix it.

“Electricity prices are up 15.8% over the last year and nearly 20% since January 2021. Joe Biden and Democrats in Congress are to blame, and they have no plan to fix it.

“Real wages have fallen every month since Biden’s $1.9 trillion stimulus spending spree passed. Joe Biden and Democrats in Congress are to blame, and they have no plan to fix it.

“Paychecks cover less. Joe Biden and Democrats in Congress are to blame, and they have no plan to fix it.

“Savings are shrinking. Joe Biden and Democrats in Congress are to blame, and they have no plan to fix it.

“More and more Americans are sinking deeper into debt. Joe Biden and Democrats in Congress are to blame, and they have no plan to fix it.

“Democrats went on multiple radical and reckless spending sprees and stuck the American people with the bill. They voted to double the size of the IRS and hire 87,000 new agents to harass more hardworking Americans who attempt to comply with a complex, burdensome tax code. They even voted to raise taxes and kill jobs during a recession. This is the unaffordable record and unacceptable reality of Democrat-controlled Washington.

“House Republicans are committed to fighting inflation and lowering the cost of living by curbing wasteful spending. We have a plan to deliver an economy that is strong and a government that is accountable.”
