Washington, D.C. – Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) released the following statement on the passage of the FY2020 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA):

“With this defense funding, Congress continues its efforts to support our troops and rebuild a dominant military. This bill funds troop readiness, speeds up the research and acquisition of next-generation weapons, modernizes our aging nuclear arsenal, and creates the U.S. Space Force, a historic achievement that will give America an edge on future battlefields. It also authorizes the largest pay raise in a decade for our service members, reforms privatized military housing to improve quality of life for military families, and ends the Widow’s Tax on survivor benefits – well-deserved rewards for the men and women who keep America safe. Lastly, it provides emergency funding for military installations affected by natural disasters this year to ensure they are fully operational again.

“While making America stronger and more secure, the NDAA imposes sanctions on the Russian Nord Stream II pipeline and the brutal Assad regime. Congress does not tolerate actions that threaten our allies and abuse human rights.

“As Christmas approaches, the United States reaffirms its desire for peace with all nations. Yet as we commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, we are reminded of the necessity of peace through strength. We must be prepared to counter emerging and ongoing threats, so that we may continue to work towards peace in our lifetime and beyond.”
