Washington D.C. – House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (CA-22) gave the following remarks on the floor of the House in support of the Repeal of ObamaCare Act, which has proven to be harmful to small businesses and middle-class families:
“Now is the time to listen to the American people and work on reforms that will actually lower costs, protect the doctor – patient relationship, and raise up rather than drag down our economy. Mr. Speaker, our families deserve better, our small businesses deserve better, and to all my colleagues, America deserves better”
“Mr. Speaker, from the moment ObamaCare was introduced, House Republicans and the American people have expressed concerns about the impacts the bill would have on the cost and quality of care, our economy and the national debt.
“We are here today because the Supreme Court’s ruling made one thing clear – it is up to Congress to act to repeal the devastating tax increases and mandates on American families; it is up to Congress to prevent further harm to our economy, job creation and the cost and quality of care.
“As we now know, ObamaCare stands today because the Supreme Court said it is constitutional as a tax.
“However, as Chief Justice Roberts stated in his opinion, “Members of this Court are vested with the authority to interpret the law; we possess neither the expertise nor the prerogative to make policy judgments. Those decisions are entrusted to our Nation’s elected leaders, who can be thrown out of office if the people disagree with them. It is not our job to protect the people from the consequences of their political choices.”
“Unfortunately, what we’ve learned over the past two and half years is this law has proven to be not only bad policy, but also filled with broken promises. Consider the President’s promise that if you like your current health care plan, you can keep it. Well, it turns out up to 80% of small employer plans are at risk of losing their current coverage.
“President Obama promised the law would bring down premiums by $2,500 for the typical family. Turns out premiums have already been raised by at least $1,200 on the average family. And CBO has predicted the law will cost individuals an additional $2,100 more in premiums than if the law had not passed.
“President Obama promised he would not sign a bill that adds “one dime to our deficits.” Turns out the law will increase the deficit by hundreds of billions of dollars.
“President Obama promised he wouldn’t raise taxes on those making less than $250,000. Turns out ObamaCare includes 21 new taxes including at least 12 taxes on the middle class.
“Promises made…Promises broken.
“It is time to do away with this broken law.
“As another President from Illinois once said ‘As our case is new, so we must think anew, and act anew. We must disenthrall ourselves, and then we shall save our country.’
“Now is the time to listen to the American people and work on reforms that will actually lower costs, protect the doctor – patient relationship, and raise up rather than drag down our economy.
“Mr. Speaker, our families deserve better, our small businesses deserve better, and to all my colleagues, America deserves better.”
