Washington D.C. – House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) released the following statement in regard to the House passage of the fiscal year 2014 National Defense Authorization Act:

“The brave men and women of our military, who risk their lives every day to protect our nation and preserve the liberties we enjoy as Americans, must be equipped to perform their duties and provide for themselves and their families during and after their time of service. Today’s vote in the House on the National Defense Authorization Act responds to these critical needs by providing the resources necessary for defense and keeps military pay competitive with private sector wages. At the same time, this legislation applies responsible budgeting as set in the House-passed budget resolution. Failing to identify and fix the programs within our Armed Services that are falling short of their intended purpose puts other military functions at greater risk and wastes the American taxpayers’ money. I am also proud of the significant strides this legislation makes in addressing the troubling number of cases of sexual assault in the military. I hope that the Senate moves quickly to provide certainty and support to our military and the millions who have served with tremendous honor.
