Washington, D.C. – House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) released the following statement on the introduction of his bill, the Defend COVID Research from Hackers Act, which would help protect American advancements toward the development of a COVID-19 vaccine from hackers, and hold those that attempt to commit these cyber crimes accountable:

“America has answered the call to save the world from fascism and communism, and through our drive and spirit of innovation, we will do so again by finding a cure to this virus. Our researchers are the brightest minds in the world, and because of them, we are developing a Victory Vaccine faster than ever in the history of any virus. When we have a vaccine, we will share it with the world, so that every nation can be better equipped in our fight against this virus. But we have seen that other nations – like China – use this virus to exploit other countries for political advantages. We refuse to allow our innovation to be exploited by China, Russia, or any other hackers. We are going to protect the cure from falling into the wrong hands so that no one can use it as leverage for their own malicious ends. The stakes are too high for these significant cyber crimes to go unpunished. My legislation will hold these criminals accountable.”
