Washington, D.C. – House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) released the following statement in observance of Juneteenth, emphasizing the need to continue working toward fulfilling the promise of America and building a more perfect union:

“Today’s holiday goes by many names: Juneteenth, Jubilee Day, and Freedom Day, among others. But its purpose is singular and significant: to celebrate the end of slavery in America and the beginning of a new birth of freedom. It keeps the memories of the emancipated alive, their perseverance in focus, and their ultimate triumph meaningful.

“155 years later, there is still work to do to fulfill the promise of America. The pressing need to ensure equal justice and equal opportunity for all, regardless of race, color, or creed, remains. Congress has an important role to play, and we must work vigorously to pass police reform and school choice, two of the most important civil rights issues of our era. But meeting this moment in full will require more than policy changes. I urge all Americans to appeal to their better angels.

“As individuals, we must embrace forgiveness over fanaticism, love over lawlessness, compassion over confrontation, and healing over hatred, in public and private. As a nation, we must rejoice in our accomplishments, recognize our shortcomings, and resolve to further reform our practices so that they align with our professed principles.

“We have come a long way, and I have no doubt that we will do our part to build a more perfect union.”
