Americans are headed into winter amidst a troubling energy crisis with serious implications for our energy and food costs – which both have been steadily rising for months.

This week, natural gas prices hit their highest mark since 2008. The price of oil – and in turn, gasoline — is the highest it’s been since 2014. Recent projections suggest these trends could add 10 to 20 cents per gallon to already high gas receipts by the end of the year. These data points come on the heels of a United States energy revolution that, just two years ago, led America to be the top oil and gas producer in the world – creating jobs and lowering prices for all Americans. We are left wondering: what happened and where do we go from here?

Instead of heeding these red flags and taking meaningful action to protect American jobs and reduce energy costs, President Biden and Democrats in Congress are proposing, among many others, two disastrous energy policies that will undeniably make these supply shortages and price spikes worse.

Included in the Democrats’ multi-trillion dollar “social spending” plan is a natural gas tax and arbitrary bans on oil and gas production on many federal lands and waters. The natural gas tax alone is predicted to increase our energy bills up to $242 per year. Because natural gas powers our industrial economy, this natural gas tax will also raise the cost of nearly 6,000 other everyday products and technologies. As Americans consider this legislation, they should know this policy isn’t simply a tax on a commodity — it is a tax on heating your home and feeding your family.

The Democrat’s proposed bans and restrictions on drilling are an additional price burden on Americans’ everyday needs – every trip to the gas station is a reminder. But it also hands leverage and power to entities like Russia and OPEC as they seek to replace the U.S. as a leader in the world’s energy supply. But the worst part is, this ban will put thousands of Americans out of a job and leave our natural resources in the ground.

These policies benefit no one in America – they won’t reduce global emissions and they exist solely to appease the most far-left activists in our country. Coming out of a year and a half of hardship, Americans can’t afford such cowardice from their elected leaders. But that’s exactly what Democrats plan to deliver with their multi-trillion dollar social spending bill.

This bill must be defeated before Americans are stuck with bills they can’t afford.
