The election of President Obama ushered in a new era of big government and with it a renewed flurry of mismanagement. Good as the intentions of government programs may be, the years and decades of waste, fraud, abuse, scandal, ineptitude, and obscurity mean big government can’t be trusted with its good intentions.

Over the years, the Administration has been faced with one scandal, misstep, or governmental failing after another. And when each new report of ineptitude surfaces, the Administration’s response time and again is “we didn’t know.”

It’s amazing how much this Administration doesn’t know. Here’s a list of some of the major scandals the President reportedly only heard about after the stories hit the press:

1)    Reports of long VA wait times and secret waiting lists

Most recently, reports surfaced that regional VA offices had secret waiting lists and that many veterans died on the waiting lists while administrators collected bonuses for good conduct. Though the Washington Times reported that the Obama-Biden transition team learned about the existence of inaccurate wait time reports in 2008, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said yesterday that the President learned about the scandal from a CNN report a few weeks ago.

2) Glitches

After the disastrous rollout of, a key piece of the President’s signature law, then-Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius told CNN’s Sanjay Gupta that the president did not know about the glitches before October 1.

3)    NSA spying on world leaders

The President did not know for nearly five years that his own spies were bugging the phones of world leaders. He only reviewed the practice after leaks revealed its existence.

4)    IRS targeting of conservative groups

The President said himself in a press conference last year that he learned about the IRS scandal from the news. “Well, let me take the IRS situation first,” he said. “I first learned about it from the same news reports that I think most people learned about this.  I think it was on Friday.”

5)    DOJ wiretapping news organizations

The Administration’s Justice Department subpoenaed the Associated Press and Carney said the President learned about it from “news reports” he read while on the road.

6)    Solyndra

When asked in a press conference how the President learned about the government’s pouring hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars into a failing green-energy company, Carney said the President “probably read some news accounts of it—I’m not aware that he’s been briefed.”

7)    Fast and Furious

When the Fast and Furious gun running scandal came to light, Carney said that “the President did not know about this tactic until he heard about it through the media; the Attorney General did not know about it.

If the President truly did not know about these scandals and mistakes, we should doubt his ability to properly manage the leviathan government that he helped create.
