Washington, D.C. – House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) issued the following statement in commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

“Today marks the 80th Anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, a day that President Roosevelt rightly predicted ‘will live in infamy.’

“With the full strength of the Imperial Japanese Navy bearing down on them, the American soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines of Pearl Harbor held their positions in defense of America and their fellow Americans. Their stiff resistance in the face of a surprise attack not only surprised the enemy, but also galvanized more than 16 million Americans to faithfully serve throughout World War II. Their examples of valor, heroism, and selfless sacrifice are the defining element of our armed forces.

“Today, by saying ‘Remember Pearl Harbor,’ we mourn the 2,403 Americans who were killed, salute the courage of those who fought through the attack, and memorialize every member of the Greatest Generation who fought for our freedoms. Furthermore, we look to this anniversary as a moment to recommit to the policies of deterrence, which we know are essential for peace.

“This year, Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day fittingly coincides with the passing of Senator Bob Dole and Easy Company member Edward Shames, two patriots whose legacies embody the ethos of the Greatest Generation. As a nation, we should all use this moment to reflect on what we can do to help our veterans, remember their sacrifices, and further memorialize their incredible stories.”
