Rep. Carter Discusses Forestry Management with a Local Tree Farmer
Rep. Buddy Carter (GA-01)
Energy Innovation Agenda: Natural Solutions and Conservation
Georgia is the number one forestry state in the nation, and Rep. Carter talked with his friend Joe Hopkins, a tree farmer in South Georgia, about the importance of managing forests and the role of trees in capturing carbon.
One problem Mr. Hopkins says in his business is the current tax code. When a disaster occurs and he loses large parts of his forest, his company is unable to expense the loss of product. The consequences for Mr. Hopkins are expensive, but it also means they lose their “oxygen factory”, and therefore the ability to naturally clean the air.
As Rep. Carter says, we can encourage working forests and help our rural communities by enacting common sense policies in Congress.
