Washington, D.C. – House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) appeared on Fox & Friends this morning to discuss how Congress is taking action to cut wasteful spending and the importance of the midterm elections.

Excerpts of the interview are below, or watch online here.

On how Congress is working with the Trump Administration to cut wasteful spending and continue to grow the economy:

“We’re trying to cut wasteful spending with recessions…under Bill Clinton they did it 111 times, Ronald Reagan 214 times. We made a promise to the American public…. Unemployment today is at the lowest it has been in almost 20 years. If you have somebody in college no longer are they fearful that they have to move back home with their parents–they’re going into one of the strongest phases to find a job in this economy we’ve ever seen.”

On the negative impacts of California’s gas tax hike versus the positive impacts of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act:

“I’m from California and we just submitted an initiative to repeal the gasoline tax–to actually lower the price for individuals, just like we did to the tax code. 48 of 50 states now have lower electrical bills because tax savings have been passed onto consumers. America is about to become energy independent as a result of repealing regulations and letting people go out and find oil and gas…”

On spending time with veterans from Bakersfield in the U.S. Capitol:

“Right after I leave here I’m going to give them a tour of the House floor. This is an Honor Flight from Bakersfield, California. There are 16 veterans–3 from World War II, 13 from the Korean War. I flew out of Bakersfield with them, and we do this on regular basis. How we treat veterans says a lot about the values of our country. We cannot do enough for these individuals that gave us our freedoms and defended it.”

On the importance of keeping a GOP majority in the House:

“I will tell you this, people can underestimate us–they have done that before. This is the same thing Nancy Pelosi has said before. All Democrats want to do is capture this government to impeach this president, stop anything from happening, and raise your taxes. I think the American public is too smart for that. They have watched unemployment reach the lowest it has been in 18 years, and they watched the world become safer. There is so much more we can do to make this country greater.”
