Washington, D.C. – House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) released the following statement on House passage of H.R. 5243, the Zika Response Appropriations Act:

We must respond to Zika forcefully and responsibly to turn the tide against this emerging public health crisis. After studying the issue and consulting with experts, the House has laid down a path to counter the outbreak, providing funding that we need this year to search for a cure, stop the spread of this disease, and help those already infected with the virus. We’ve already seen what Zika can do, especially in the tragic instances of microcephaly that have occurred among infants. We must take decisive action to prevent the spread of this virus in the United States. That is why beyond offering funding, this bill includes oversight so that Congress and the American people can be sure we are fighting Zika as effectively as possible.”
