Washington, D.C. – House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) released the following statement on House adoption of H. Res. 639, authorizing the Speaker to file an amicus brief on behalf of the House in the case of United States v. Texas:
“Twenty-two times the President said that he could neither ignore the law nor create his own law—an opinion completely in line with the Constitution. Then he changed his mind with his executive action that ignored duly passed law in an attempt to grant millions of illegal immigrants blanket immunity from deportation.
“The President’s action is wrong on its merits, but it doesn’t matter what side of the immigration debate you’re on. The Constitution clearly does not grant the President unilateral authority to ignore the law of the land. To make that point clear, today the House voted to authorize Speaker Ryan to clearly assert Congress’s Article I authority through an amicus brief on behalf of the House in the case of United States v. Texas, which is currently being reviewed by the Supreme Court. With this vote, we make clear that the President’s infringement on Congress’s constitutional powers is an affront to self-rule and undermines the liberty of the American people.”
