Washington, D.C. – House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) released the following statement on H.R. 5053, the Preventing IRS Abuse and Protecting Free Speech Act:

“An unfortunate consequence of the Obama presidency has been the politicization of government, especially the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Only a few years ago, IRS officials targeted conservative groups for retaliation by delaying their applications for non-profit status solely on the grounds of their political ideology. This politicization treats the American people unfairly not only by disrupting equal application of the law, but also by undermining public trust in government. We need a government that serves the people again. The legislation passed by the House today will give the American people ease of mind by blocking the IRS from collecting the names of donors to tax-exempt organizations—information the IRS could use to retaliate against organizations and donors it dislikes. The IRS has shown itself untrustworthy, and we should not allow the agency access to any information it does not need to do its job.”
