Washington D.C. – House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) delivered the following remarks at a press conference today announcing the filing of a discharge petition on H.R. 336, the Strengthening America’s Security in the Middle East Act of 2019.
Leader McCarthy was joined by House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (LA-01), Republican Conference Chair Liz Cheney (WY-AL), and Reps. Brian Mast (FL-18), Michael McCaul (TX-10), Lee Zeldin (NY-01), David Kustoff (TN-08), and Billy Long (MO-07).

“There is a rising trend in anti-Semitism across the world — elected leaders have a duty to address it.
“One particular example of this trend is the growing participation in the ugly Boycott, Sanction, and Divestment (BDS) movement, an echo of evil anti-Semitic boycotts that form a dark part of human history.
“The BDS movement seeks to prevent individuals, private companies, and even entire countries from doing business with Israeli firms. The ultimate aim is to exclude, isolate, and delegitimize Israel, which, according to BDS advocates, does not have a right to exist.
“Political leaders on both sides of the aisle, in both chambers, have a responsibility to confront the evil of anti-Semitism head-on.
“In February, a bipartisan proposal to counter the BDS movement passed the Senate with 77 votes. Seventy-seven votes, it was called S.1. Think about this: Senator Schumer not only voted for that legislation… he cosponsored it!
“Today, we’ll have an opportunity where your actions can speak louder than your words. We’ll have the ability to sign a discharge petition to bring that [House version of S. 1] bill to the floor.
“We ask just 21 Democrats to join with what the rest of the nation expects from their leaders, especially those who are elected to office — to stand for what is right and to stand up against the appalling history we have found and to stand against the growing anti-Semitism going around this nation.”
