Washington, D.C. – House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23), along with House Republican Whip Steve Scalise (LA-01), House Republican Conference Chair Liz Cheney (WY-AL), and Reps. Ben Cline (VA-06), Adam Kinzinger (IL-16), Chris Smith (NJ-04), and Jackie Walorski (IN-02), joined pro-life activists today to talk about the importance of defending babies born alive after a failed or attempted abortion.

Remarks are below, or watch online here.

“Thank you, Steve. I want to give a special thanks to Jill and Olivia and Melissa for joining us today and all the members behind me.

“This is not a partisan issue. This is not about Republicans or Democrats — this is about life. This is about a child who survives an abortion, just the same as any newborn, being able to survive. They need care. We shouldn’t have to be talking about this, but we look at what’s moving across this country, the extreme of what the Democrats have moved to.

“Last night on the floor, for the 17th time, we asked to bring up the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. For the 17th time, the Democrats refused. Every time, those in the chair say it’s not agreed upon on both sides. There’s no objection on the Republican side to bring the bill up, it’s only on one side.

“Today you’ll hear from an individual who was a nurse, who actually watched this practice go forward. In America, we should never hear of this.

“That’s why this legislation is so important. That’s why this does not have to be partisan – this is about the life of a child. A child who survives an abortion should have the opportunity for life, and we should defend it as we defend every other child throughout America.

“I’d like to bring forward our conference chair, who’s been fighting for life for her entire political career and helped put this all together today, Liz Cheney.”
