Davenport, Iowa – Today, House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) joined Representatives Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA-02) and Ashley Hinson (IA-01) in Iowa’s 2nd congressional district to hear from constituents who are concerned with Speaker Pelosi’s ongoing efforts to disenfranchise their votes. Leader McCarthy also held a news conference where he explained that Rep. Miller-Meeks will serve out the term she rightfully won, despite Democrats’ attempt to retroactively steal her seat.

This brazen attempt by House Democrats to bolster their razor-thin majority isn’t just wrong, it’s antithetical to our democracy. “Would [Democrats] do this if they didn’t have a five-seat majority? Because at the end of the day, Iowans made a decision. And it’s their voice, and they have a right to have Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks, who they elected, to continue to serve them. Just like she’s been doing every single day since she’s been sworn in,” said Leader McCarthy.

The Constitution gives Congress the authority to determine its own members, but it is unprecedented to try to unseat a duly elected and certified winner of a state election simply because the party attempting to do so is in the majority.

Leader McCarthy put it plainly: “It’s time to move on. I serve with the Congresswoman, we’ve been to the border already… [and] I watched her on the floor already offering an amendment to make sure those coming across, especially children, get tested for COVID.”

Losing candidate Rita Hart already admitted that Democrats can’t get “the result that we need” by appealing to Iowa’s impartial courts—since the race was already counted, recounted, certified by the Iowa State Board of Canvassers, and Congresswoman Miller-Meeks was sworn in as a member of Congress by Speaker Pelosi herself. So they launched a partisan probe with the Committee on House Administration.

But the problem with Democrats’ strategy is that this isn’t just about any one party getting what they want, this is about the thousands of Iowa voters who elected Rep. Miller-Meeks to represent them.

Iowa’s voters, and every American who puts their faith in our democracy, deserve better than this short-sighted attempt to unseat a duly-elected Representative. As Congresswoman Miller-Meeks explained today, “People need to have trust, and faith, and confidence in their elections… This move will undermine confidence in our election system.”

Here’s what some Iowa-02 residents had to say about the attempt to unseat their Congresswoman:

  • “I knew that she would represent Iowa values, and as an Iowa voter it’s important to me that our Iowa values are represented by who the people from Iowa want to speak, and not who D.C. or Pelosi wants to hand-pick.” – Michelle Crawford
  • “It is important [our representative] is elected and not appointed. I worry about who is held accountable – if she is accountable to the voters or if [Rita] Hart is going to be accountable to Democrats in the House.” – Kerry Gruenhagen

Democrats are showing that they care more about holding power than protecting democracy. The votes in Iowa’s 2nd District were counted, recounted, and certified; Rep Miller-Meeks is the indisputable winner and will serve out her term in Congress. As Leader McCarthy asked today, “How much will Iowa have to hurt and how long will this have to continue on when it’s already been decided?”

It’s time for Democrats to end this partisan charade.
