Washington D.C. – Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) released the following statement following Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s announcement on the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA):

“More than a year ago, President Trump sat on the world stage and signed an agreement with the leaders of Canada and Mexico to revolutionize the way we do business with our top trading partners. Today, the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement is ready to be ratified. This deal not only brings our trade policies into the modern age, it is a victory for the American worker — including those who have felt the impact of bad trade policies of the past which have outsourced jobs and opportunity.

“In the midst of the greatest economy in our lifetime with record unemployment and rising wages, this agreement ensures this prosperity extends to communities throughout the country that build, grow, and farm American-made goods. As President Trump continues to press China on their unfair and destructive trade policies, this deal will give the United States the negotiating power to maintain the most dynamic and prosperous economy in the world.

“Today is a great day for the country. But these obvious and bipartisan opportunities to make America stronger have fallen victim to the partisan politics in Washington.  Democrats have spent the last several months objecting and making excuses to delay this agreement — too worried that a winner for the country is a political loser for their progressive base. Republicans never once doubted the benefits of passing a trade deal built for the 21st century – a deal worthy of the legacy of the American worker — and have been relentless in our advocacy. With today’s announcement, we are one step closer to building a stronger future for all communities for generations to come. We look forward to a strong bipartisan vote out of the House to make this Agreement a reality.”
