There are still people living in squalor at our southern border. Approximately 20,000 more are gathered in Colombia preparing for possible migration to the U.S., and this comes after two consecutive months of 200,000 migrant apprehensions at our border. Through all of the ensuing chaos, Biden’s appointed ‘border czar’, Vice President Kamala Harris, has been noticeably absent.

Since her appointment six months ago by President Biden to lead efforts to “stem migration” at the southern border the situation has actually only spiraled further out of control. The humanitarian situation continues to be dire, our border communities overwhelmed, and border patrol agents are being asked to do the impossible. Since her appointment as ‘border czar’, over 4,762 pounds of fentanyl have been seized by Customs and Border Patrol and 970,000 migrants have been apprehended.

On June 6 — a full 72 days after her appointment — Vice President Harris departed for Guatemala and Mexico as part of her outreach to countries in the Northern Triangle. Following her visit, she released a plan to address the “root causes” of migration from those countries, but as noted in NBC News, “[The plan] does not provide a detailed timeline or policy actions to be taken.”

On June 25 — 92 days into her appointment — a revealing interview with Lester Holt, and a border visit from former President Trump forced Vice President Harris to reluctantly visit our southern border. There, she didn’t mention the illegal smuggling of fentanyl into the country that is ravaging our communities, or that “fentanyl seizures at the U.S. southern border have risen dramatically.” That’s a headline from NBC News in June.

On August 20th — the same month that we had over 170k immigrants encountered at the border for the sixth month in a row and in the midst of the disastrously- planned Afghanistan withdrawal  — Vice President Harris left the country for Southeast Asia.

On September 8th — the day the Taliban announced their interim government after the withdrawal in Afghanistan — the Vice President was campaigning in California for Governor Gavin Newsom, a reminder of this administration’s foreign policy failures.

On September 19th — as Customs and Border Patrol agents at the Del Rio sector were being overwhelmed by the massive influx of immigrants arriving — Vice President Harris was conducting the coin flip prior to kickoff at a college football game.

Now, six months into her appointment, we have a humanitarian and security crisis at the border with no leadership from the official tasked with “stemming the migration” of immigrants across our border. Even members of her own party are fed up. Rep. Henry Cuellar told CNN host Ana Cabrera that Vice President Harris’s visit to Mexico and Guatemala has had no impact on stopping migrants from traveling to the United States.

As ‘Border Czar’, Kamala Harris has done nothing to help stop the border crisis. She has let down the local leaders and our Border Patrol agents who have been forced to deal with the fallout of this administration’s bad policies. Even after months of being named to this position, this administration still has no clear plan to address the situation.

Her lack of leadership has failed the American people.
