Washington D.C. – House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) made the following remarks at today’s House leadership press conference:
“Good morning. Currently in my home state of California we are suffering through one of the worst droughts in a century. It is even worse based upon the regulations that we have. This House majority didn’t sit back and wait until this day to take action. We took action last Congress. Unfortunately, like many of our bills, we sent it to the Senate and the Senate refused to act on it. Let alone even act on what their policy is for a drought in California. This has gone beyond the point of partisanship.
“Tomorrow, we will pass another bill that won’t solve all of the problems, but it will put us on a path to sustainable water programs. The Senate can no longer ignore this issue. There will be thousands of individuals in California, there will be cities that will go without water this year. For the first time in the history of the state project – a state project that was built when the current Governor’s father was Governor, more than 56 years – the allocation is zero. But to every other water user, they pay 100% for the water regardless of what they get.
“So I call upon the Senate, and especially our Senators. You have to act. If you don’t like the bill we send then tell us what you do support so we can go to conference and get something done. But stop ignoring a problem.”
