Washington D.C. – House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) released the following statement on the selection of Congressman Trey Gowdy (SC-04) as chairman of the select committee to investigate the September 11th, 2012 terrorist attack on our diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya:

“For more than a year and half, our committee chairmen have conducted numerous oversight hearings regarding the tragic loss of four American lives in Benghazi, Libya at the hands of terrorists. After discovering that the Administration has withheld emails, despite a subpoena, indicating the White House edited official talking points regarding the attack, Congress now has no choice but to begin impaneling a select committee. It is unacceptable that this Administration has willfully disregarded our subpoenas and impeded our investigations.

“I applaud the Speaker’s selection of my good friend and colleague Rep. Trey Gowdy to chair this select committee. As a former federal prosecutor and current Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, Trey has distinguished himself as a tough and fair arbiter of the truth. I am confident that he will lead the select committee with the necessary persistence to uncover the facts of what exactly transpired on the ground at our diplomatic mission that night in 2012.”
